UK new car registrations rise 13.7% in August 2026, with BEV share above prior Augusts back to 2023 ahead of the '76 plate change
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported on 4 September 2026 that UK new car registrations rose 13.7% year on year to 94,236 units in August 2026, the market's ninth consecutive month of growth. Battery electric vehicles took 29.8% of the month's registrations, a share the SMMT itself attributes partly to August's low volumes; that share tops the prior Augusts the SMMT lists back to 2023. Year to date, BEV share stands at 25.6% against the UK mandate's 33% headline target. All figures are UK-market only.
The UK new car market grew 13.7% in August 2026, with 94,236 registrations recorded in a month that is typically one of the quietest of the year, according to figures published on 4 September 2026 by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the UK industry body that compiles the registration data. The SMMT described it as the ninth consecutive month of growth and the best August since the introduction of the biannual plate change, noting that many buyers defer purchases ahead of September's number plate change - the point at which the '76 plate takes effect in the UK.
Growth was recorded across all sales types in the UK market. Fleet registrations rose 10.1% and accounted for 57.2% of the month's market, private demand grew 19.0% to take 40.8% of registrations, and the business segment, at 2.0% of the market, rose 14.5%. For the year to date through August 2026, the SMMT's table shows 1,388,735 UK registrations, up 9.8% on the same period of 2025.
Electrified powertrains led, with a seasonal caveat
Every powertrain except petrol grew in August 2026, and electrified vehicles posted the fastest gains. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) grew 39.8% to 14.5% of the month's registrations, hybrids (HEVs) rose 26.3% to 12.7%, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) increased 27.7% to take 29.8% of the UK monthly market. Petrol was the only fuel type to decline, down 3.5%.
The SMMT was careful to frame the 29.8% BEV share as a seasonal effect rather than a step change. It called the figure the second highest monthly share of 2026 so far, part of a spike seen every August since 2023, and said the low overall volumes in the month amplify percentage shifts. The release's notes give the August BEV shares for prior years: 20.1% in 2023, 22.6% in 2024 and 26.5% in 2025 - so the 2026 August share is above each prior August the SMMT lists, back to 2023. August typically represents around 4% of UK new car registrations, or 1 in 25.
September as the 'acid test'
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes framed September, with its higher volumes and the new '76 plate, as the real measure of demand. In the quoted statement he said August's strength showed motorists responding to choice and offers, but that the low-volume month means September will be the 'acid test'. He also argued that UK mandate targets must be grounded in the reality of demand.
The mandate gap and the government review
The UK zero emission vehicle mandate is the policy backdrop to these figures. The SMMT's release states that BEV uptake reached 25.6% of the UK market in the first eight months of 2026 - a record high, as the body presents it - but still significantly below the 33% headline mandate target. It says manufacturers are investing heavily and discounting deeply to stimulate demand, and that when targets outpace the market, compliance costs rise and residual values come under pressure. The release also welcomes the UK government's decision to review the mandate, which Hawes called an essential next step rather than a retreat from decarbonization.
What readers should keep in mind when reading the numbers
Three caveats follow directly from the SMMT's own material:
- These are registration figures for the UK market only, published by the SMMT on 4 September 2026; they do not describe any other market.
- The 29.8% August BEV share comes from a month the SMMT says is typically around 4% of annual registrations, so small unit shifts move percentages sharply - the body's notes list August BEV shares rising each year since 2023 for this reason.
- The 25.6% year-to-date BEV share is a figure for the first eight months of 2026 and sits below the 33% headline mandate target the release names; the gap is the SMMT's own framing of the compliance position.
The SMMT publishes the underlying tables alongside its release, so the figures above can be checked directly on the SMMT's own site: the release dated 4 September 2026 carries the monthly and year-to-date tables by sales type and fuel type, plus the top-10 model lists, and the body's data pages hold the fuller registration series. For the September outcome the SMMT's next monthly release, expected in early October 2026, will show whether the 'acid test' Hawes described was passed.
