Stellantis, on paper: the January 16, 2021 merger that put FCA and Groupe PSA under one ticker
A files/history reference on Stellantis's founding: the FCA–Groupe PSA merger's completion on January 16, 2021, the listing days that followed in Paris, Milan and New York, and the dated document trail behind the deal, as recorded in the company's own press release and investor merger page. The About Us statements cited are as that page read when captured on October 20, 2026.
Stellantis exists because two incumbents, Peugeot S.A. ("Groupe PSA") and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. ("FCA"), completed a cross-border merger in January 2021 and folded their brand portfolios into a new parent, Stellantis N.V. The document trail behind that merger is published with dates attached by the company itself.
The press release announcing completion carries the date January 16, 2021, and the investor relations merger page lists the trail from the October 31, 2019 announcement of intent to a February 23, 2021 IRS form issued after the deal closed.
The day the merger became effective
The Stellantis press release of January 16, 2021 states that the merger "became effective" that day: "London - The merger between Peugeot S.A. ("Groupe PSA") and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. ("FCA") (NYSE: FCAU / MTA: FCA) that will lead the path to the creation of Stellantis N.V. ("Stellantis"), became effective today." The quoted passage fixes the effective date and, separately, the trading calendar that followed.
The same release, marked "As previously announced", set out the listing schedule: "As previously announced, Stellantis's common shares will begin trading on Euronext in Paris and the Mercato Telematico Azionario in Milan on Monday, January 18, 2021, and on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, in each case under the ticker symbol "STLA"." That gives three first-trading days — Paris and Milan on January 18, 2021, and New York on January 19, 2021 — in each case under the single ticker symbol STLA stated in the release.
The investor merger page, as read for this article, assembles the record in dated sequence. Before the merger could close, the paperwork ran through several stages:
- October 31, 2019: Groupe PSA and FCA plan to join forces to build a world leader for a new era in sustainable mobility
- December 18, 2019: Groupe PSA and FCA agree to merge
- October 28, 2020: Common Draft Terms of the Cross-Border Merger between FCA and PSA
- November 18, 2020: Peugeot S.A. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. Shareholders' Meetings to approve their merger transaction to create Stellantis will be held on 4 January 2021
- November 20, 2020: Approval of the prospectus relating to the listing of Stellantis shares
- February 23, 2021: IRS Form 8937 – Report of Organizational Actions Affecting Basis of Securities
The merger also had a US securities dimension. The January 2021 press release's forward-looking-statements section references "the registration statement on Form F-4 filed with the SEC on July 24, 2020, as amended, which was declared effective on November 20, 2020", alongside filings with the AFM and CONSOB and PSA's filings with the AMF.
Stellantis as the About Us page read on October 20, 2026
The About Us page, which carries no publication date and was read for this article at its capture on October 20, 2026, describes Stellantis as "a constellation of 14 iconic vehicle brands and two mobility brands", naming them as Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, FIAT, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, Vauxhall, plus Free2move and Leasys. The page states the company is "publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Euronext Milan (STLAM), and Euronext Paris (STLAP)" — market-specific tickers for Milan and Paris, whereas the 2021 release had shown a single STLA symbol. That is a difference between two documents read at different times, not a change this article has separately confirmed.
That page also gives the company's own scale figures with caveats attached: manufacturing facilities in Enlarged Europe, North America, South America and Africa, customers in more than 130 markets, and "nearly 260,000 employees" — a figure the page footnotes as excluding "employees of joint arrangements, associates and unconsolidated subsidiaries". These are the company's own stated counts with their stated definitions, not independent measurements, and they reflect what the page said at its October 20, 2026 capture.
Every date above comes from a primary company document, and the trail is public. To verify:
- Read the January 16, 2021 press release "The merger of FCA and Groupe PSA has been completed" on stellantis.com for the effective date and listing days
- Open the "FCA | Groupe PSA Merger" page under Stellantis's investor section for the dated document list, from the 2019 announcements to the IRS Form 8937
- Cross-check the listing venues, ticker symbols and brand list quoted here against the About Us page as it reads today, noting that the version read for this article is its capture of October 20, 2026, and its footnotes attached to the employee count
